Small businesses can improve their chances of being recommended by AI search tools on a budget by publishing clear, direct answers on key pages, adding structured data, keeping business details consistent across the web, earning genuine reviews and mentions, and making sure AI crawlers are not blocked. Most of it overlaps with good SEO.
About a third of U.S. adults have used ChatGPT, according to Pew Research Center, and the share keeps climbing. When one of them asks for "an affordable roofer near me," somebody gets named. It does not have to be the business with the biggest budget.
AI search rewards clarity, not spend
AI assistants assemble answers from sources they can read and trust. A small business with a clear, specific page often beats a big one with vague marketing copy.
Five budget-friendly moves
- Answer first. Open each service page with one or two plain sentences: what it is, rough cost, how long it takes.
- Add structured data. Organization or LocalBusiness, Service and FAQ schema that match what is on the page.
- Keep details consistent. Name, address, phone and services identical everywhere.
- Earn reviews and mentions. AI tools cross-check reputation across the web.
- Do not block AI crawlers by accident. Check your robots.txt with a free AI crawler checker.
Test it yourself
Ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity the three questions your customers ask most. Note who gets named and which sources are cited. That is your baseline.
