The biggest SEO red flags are guaranteed rankings, "#1 on Google" promises, submissions to hundreds of directories, backlinks sold by volume, private blog networks, secret methods, results promised in days, long lock-in contracts, the agency owning your assets, and reporting that stops at rankings.
Most businesses that got burned by SEO saw the warning signs. They just did not know they were warning signs. Here they are, in plain English.
1. "We guarantee first-page rankings"
Google itself says no one can guarantee a number one ranking. Guarantees usually mean tiny keywords nobody searches, or risky tactics.
2. "#1 on Google"
Rankings differ by location, device and person. A single "position" is a sales line.
3. "Submission to 500 directories and search engines"
An outdated tactic that can leave you with spammy, inconsistent listings to clean up.
4. "100 backlinks a month"
Links sold by the count are usually bought or from networks. Google's spam policies call this link spam.
5. "Our private network"
Private blog networks are a link scheme. The bump rarely outlasts the risk.
6. "Our secret method" or "special relationship with Google"
No one gets special treatment in organic results. Google Partners is an advertising program.
7. "Results in 30 days"
Real SEO usually takes months to show meaningful movement.
8. "12-month contract required"
A long minimum term protects the agency. Ask for a short initial term with clear exit terms.
9. "The website remains our property"
You should own your site, content, domain, analytics and Google Business Profile.
10. Reports with only rankings and impressions
If calls, leads and revenue are missing, ask why.
